Frequently Asked Questions

Wedding Information

Q. What is the camera charge for?
A. The camera charge helps to pay for the cost of processing of files, equipment repairs or replacement, the engagement sitting, processing and prints, and other costs associated with the photography of your wedding.

Q. Do you do photography of weddings where the bride and groom do not see each other before the wedding?
A. Yes! It is your wedding, you should have it done the way you want. The only thing that we ask is that you keep
in mind the amount of time that it takes to complete the formals after the ceremony. For instance, if you initially
wanted only 5 hours worth of coverage but do not want to see each other before the wedding, you would need
to allow for an extra 1-2 hours of coverage time.

Q. Why does it require more time to take the formals of the bride and groom after the wedding (instead of the usual before the wedding photographs)?
A. We have to set up and take down equipment twice instead of once. More artwork is generally necessary because of the increased probability of crushed flowers and makeup or other marks on clothing. The photographs are generally more rushed because the wedding party is in a hurry to get to the reception. It is often more difficult to locate people for the photograph because they are (you fill in the blank) so the photography takes longer. We take more exposures to get good photographs because people are not generally as relaxed. All of these things increase our costs and we feel it is only good business practice to pass these costs on to the people who use these services.

Q. Do you allow others to take photographs while during the day?
A. Yes! We know that many other photographers don't allow anyone to take any photographs of the groups that they set up. Sometimes this is because they have equipment that will have problems if someone else takes a flash photo, sometimes they are banking on more people ordering the photographs that they are taking and see their profits disappear with each photograph someone else makes. We ask that you first let us get the photographs. We can then make sure that everyone is at his/her best and we won't have our backs in those photos, then we'll move over and let others take their photos. How many others take photos only depends on how much time you allow for the photo session. We can take more photographs if we are not waiting for others to get theirs. We also feel that our photographs will be of superior quality so you will order photos from us anyway, otherwise why would you have hired us?

Q. What about wedding packages?
A. We feel that your wedding is unique and you should not have to be forced to put the photography of your wedding into a set package. We do offer packages with our Graphi Albums because that is the most cost effective way to purchase these custom made and bound books. Even our Graphi packages can be customized by adding or substituting other products.

Q. Why do the photographs cost so much?
A. Because we are professionals. You are not just paying for photographs but for our expertise and much greater probability of having wonderful results in the photographs. I was at a wedding recently where a young lady in the pew in front of me was nervously trying to get her camera to work to get pictures of the wedding party as they walked in the church. After missing the first 3 attendants she whispered "can you help me, I just have to get this picture of the ring bearer and flower girl." I wanted to whisper back that I'm the one who has to get the picture. We did get her camera functioning. I don't know how her picture turned out but I know the bride loved mine - she ordered one for her album. As part of the cost of the wedding we have backups of everything. At least one extra camera, usually 2 or 3, enough memory cards or extra film to rephotograph your entire wedding and more equipment than we'll ever use because we have to get the photographs.

Q. Why are there different prices for different numbers of prints ordered?
A. In every wedding there is a basic cost to the studio that must be met. They include things like the photographer's time, the utilities, shipping, filing of negatives and prints, time putting together your album and prints. As more photographs are ordered the basic costs are spread out over more prints so the cost for each is less.

Q. Can I purchase my frames somewhere else?
A. Could you purchase different frames for less? Sure, but we think that your wedding photographs deserve high quality frames, not something that you would get at a discount store so we don't stock discount store merchandise.

Q. Is there a guarantee on your photographs?
A. We offer the Kodak Promise of Excellence™ on all of our photographs that are 8x10 and larger (Kodak doesn't offer the program for smaller prints to anyone). This Promise means that if you are not satisfied with your prints they will be reprinted at no cost and that if at anytime during your life you are not satisfied with the print because of fading or discoloration the photograph will be reprinted at no cost. Check out the Kodak wedding site for more information. Our Graphi Albums have a lifetime guarantee also. If you ever have problems with it bring the album back to us and we'll get it repaired or replaced.

Q. What goes on behind the scenes?
A.Pre-event Preparation
It takes about six hours to prepare for your wedding. During this time the photographer will have discussions with you about your preferences on the wedding day, do a lighting plan, schedule their logistics for the day, purchase fresh batteries, charge batteries, clean cameras and lenses, test equipment, review wedding specifics, and drive to and from the location.

Q. What kinds of things does the photographer do besides take photographs?
A. The photographer is in many cases the mini wedding coordinator. Because we have been at many weddings and we are probably the only professionals other than the minister to be at your wedding before, during and after the service we are often called upon to give advice or last minute assistance for the wedding. We carry a supply of often needed but overlooked items and are often called on to work some "magic" in saving the day.

Q. Why do you photograph weddings?
A. Because we love to! Weddings are generally fun and exciting times for the whole family of the bride and groom. There are lots of people who want their photographs taken and they usually spend a good amount of time and money to look their best. This is a dream for people who like to take photographs. It can also be very stressful for the couple. People are not used to planning for a wedding. Everything takes longer than you thought, there are always a few things you didn't think of until someone asks at the wedding. It is in these situations that we excel. We can help you through these situations and still make the process of getting great memories in photographs a fun experience. We often hear comments like "not long ago I was at so-and-so's wedding and the photographer wasn't nearly as nice and patient as you". We like to hear that, it is part of our service. You might find another photographer who can beat our prices but we make it our goal that no one will beat our service or our quality! Your main job at your wedding is to have fun and enjoy the day - we will do everything in our power to make sure that happens and so that we can have just as much fun as you!

Q. Do people really hire you for 8 - 10 hours of coverage? How long does it take to take a few pictures?
A. Yes, it is the most common request. We often have people hire us for 10 or even 12 hours. The wedding day is a special one for you. It is also a rare opportunity to get photographs of special people or groups. Our question is how much of it do you want to remember with photographs? Giving you a large selection of excellent photographs takes time, both yours and ours. Contact Us with your name and address and we'll send you a "newsletter" with some planning guides. You can use this to decide what kinds of photographs you want and how long each take, then add up the time and see for yourself.

Q. How long do you keep our wedding negatives/digital files?
A. We have negatives/files on file from weddings going back to at least 1970. We plan to keep your negatives/files
on file indefinitely. All of our digital files are backed up to DVD and kept in a vault at our studio, protected from
heat, water, humidity and other damaging elements that could affect your wedding memories.

Q. Do your photographers bring an assistant?
A. All of our wedding coverages include an assistant who will come with the photographer to help him set up and take down equipment, check hair & clothing, and take additional pictures of your wedding. If you select 8 or more hours of coverage the assistant will be another experienced photographer who will also work to take unique and spontaneous photographs of your wedding. Adding the assistant allows us to take more photographs in the same amount of time giving you a greater selection and reducing the amount of time your attention is focused on us during your wedding day.

Q. Can we suggest the kinds and types of photographs taken?
A. Yes! Please do! We give you a checklist with many suggestions as a starting point. We include space on the checklist to add your own suggestions. Our photographers would be happy to meet with you to discuss questions you might have or to see examples of photography you have cut out of magazines or samples from other weddings. We like to make photographs and we want to make sure that you have many great memories of your wedding. If your special aunt from Boston comes to your wedding and you want a photograph with her please tell us. Maybe it is the dog (or cat) who is "part of the family" or the old car your Dad restored. Memories like these make weddings special for us, please let us help you capture these memories in photographs.

Q. Why should we hire a professional photographer? My Uncle Bob has a good camera.
A. Check out this site by Kodak. So many times we have been asked to help fix wedding photos after the wedding because someone else was less expensive. Most of the time the couple ends up paying more in the end and the photographs are not as good as what we would originally have provided. This is a once in a lifetime event, what price are you willing to pay to get it right?

Q. Do you take photographs during the ceremony?
A. Yes! We usually take both color and black & white photographs during the ceremony. We do not use flash from after the procession until the recession. The pastors of many churches require that flash is not used during the ceremony to preserve the solemn nature of the ceremony. We agree with this and don't use flash even if the pastor permits it. With today's excellent high speed digital cameras we can capture these moments without the use of flash. We believe that during the ceremony we should be as inconspicuous as possible, unless you look for us you probably won't notice us during the ceremony.
